No one knows for sure how our tailless monkeys came to live on The Rock. Some scientists believe that they were brought over from Morocco as pets by the Moors who occupied Gibraltar and Spain between 711 and 1492.

When Gibraltar became British, the soldiers began to believe that the Rock would remain British for as long as our Barbary Macaques stayed here. The great British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill knew about the legend and when the macaque population was reduced to only seven during the second world war, he quickly had five female monkeys brought over from Morocco to ensure that the population could continue to grow.  Now we have about 200 monkeys roaming around Gibraltar in several packs!
